Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is breast cancer awareness month, and Premier Patient Housing would like to take this opportunity to inform guests and future guests alike of signs, treatment options, and preventative measures. People come from far and wide to visit the Texas Medical Center and get help with their breast cancer treatment. Houston has some of the best doctors in the world working for them, and they are ready to help you fight your battle.
When Should I be Concerned?
You might find yourself wondering if you have signs or symptoms of breast cancer. What exactly are these? Take a look:
- Lumps in the breast and surrounding tissue
- Any unusual changes of size, shape or appearance of the breasts
- Dimpling in the breast tissue
- Your skin resembles the skin of an orange
- A newly inverted nipple
- Peeling or flaking of the areola or breast skin
If you have any of these symptoms, you may need to see a doctor. Many people believe breast cancer is only in females, but this is not true. Yes, males can get breast cancer too! although it is rare, it is definitely possible for men to get this cancer, which is why it is so important to know the warning signs.
What can the Doctor Do?
When the doctor diagnoses you with breast cancer, there are many things that could happen afterward. While many people use more than one treatment for their breast cancer, some people may only need one kind of treatment depending on how far along the cancer is. Here are some of the main treatments used:
- Surgery – Doctors use surgery to cut out the cancer tissue.
- Chemotherapy – This includes pills and/or injections to shrink or kill the cancer cells.
- Hormonal therapy – This type of treatment looks to block cancer cells from getting the hormones they use to grow.
- Biological therapy – This biologically aligns with your body’s immune system to help the body fight the cancer cells.
- Radiation therapy – Rays that are similar to X-rays can possibly kill the cancer cells.
What can I do to Prevent this Cancer?
One of the reasons breast cancer death rates are declining is because of early detection. If you can see the changes and get to a doctor, you may very well save your life. While some people inherit breast cancer from prior family members, other people seem to “randomly” get it. Here are some ways to help prevent this cancer:
- Breast Cancer Screenings
- Perform Self-Examinations
- Exercise
- Drink in Moderation
- Eat Healthy
- Maintain a Healthy Weight
By doing these things and maintaining an allover healthy lifestyle, you can drastically decrease your chances of getting this type of cancer.
