Relaxing In Your Own Space on Labor Day

Want to relax at home this Labor Day weekend? Here are a few ways to unwind this Labor Day from the comfort of your own space.

Meditate

Meditation has long been used as a way to help calm the mind and relax — not to mention numerous other health benefits. And while many people shy away from it, thinking they have to sit like a monk for hours, anyone can easily get started with meditating simply by sitting down somewhere comfortable and paying attention to your breathing.

At-Home Spa Day

There’s no bad way to pamper yourself, so give yourself time for an at-home spa day. Consider doing a mani-pedi or a face mask. There are tons of easy recipes to make face masks at home that will leave your skin glowing and hydrated. Or, if you’re feeling extra into your pampering party, have fun going through a whole skincare routine from cleansing to toning to moisturizing and more! Take time to feel great in your skin!

Take a Nap

You know you always want one during the day and it’s no wonder, your brain needs a breather in much the same way your muscles do when you are working out.  A little shuteye clears the fog and reenergizes you to tackle your daily tasks much more effectively. But be sure to limit your mid-afternoon snooze to 20 or 30 minutes (set an alarm just in case), to avoid “sleep drunkenness” which makes it difficult to rouse from your nap and hard to fall asleep at bedtime.

Listen to Soothing Music

Relaxing music triggers changes to the body that in many ways mimic a sleep state. A slower heart rate, slower breathing, and lower blood pressure are all physiological changes that make possible the process of falling asleep and staying asleep. Music also has a soothing effect on our emotional brain, easing stress and anxiety. Research has shown that listening to relaxing music reduces feelings of anxiety, as well as the physical symptoms that accompany anxiety, including elevated blood pressure and heart rate and nervous system arousal. It also reduces cortisol, a hormone that stimulates alertness and also stress, according to numerous studies.
