With hurricane season in full effect until November , Premier Patient Housing would like to keep out guests updated on our area and what to expect. Many visitors staying with us may not have been through a hurricane before, so we are glad to give some insight on hurricane preparation! Here is a little more information about flooding, electricity, and overall preparedness while staying in Houston.

hurricane flooding

Flooding

Street flooding happens in many areas of Houston, including the Medical Center. Areas can start to flood very quickly, and it is important to stay away from wet streets. Sometimes, a street can look passable when it is not. This can put you in a bad position and you may need to get rescued. It is always best to stay in, but if you need to drive during the storm, make sure to stay on streets where you can actually see the street.

Electricity

While a storm is occurring, electricity can cut out. At Premier Patient Housing, CenterPoint Energy has full control of the electricity coming back on. They may not be able to bring the power back on while the storm is occurring, so it is important for Premier Patient Housing guests to be prepared for a blackout (like having a flashlight handy!).hurricane power outages

**Please note, Premier Patient Housing is on an electric boiler system. If the community loses power, this will affect the system and may cause a temporary loss of water. We are unable to assist with power outages, loss of water, and/or internet services during the storm.

Hurricane Prep

While the pandemic has been going on, it has been easier to already be prepared for time indoors. Staying inside while the storm passes is the safest option for anyone. What kind of items are best to keep with you during this time period and stocked up?  The National Weather Service always has the best advice for being prepared, but here are some of the basics you should have on you:

  • Water – When hurricanes roll into Houston, many stores run out of the typical 24 pack of water. You can always fill a bathtub up, or fill empty glasses or reusable bottles around the apartment.
  • Medication – Make sure to go to the pharmacy or doctor beforehand and get medication you may need for the next 2 weeks.
  • Food – Buy food that can still be used if the power goes out and the fridge is no longer an option. This can be canned goods, some types of vegetables and fruits, and packaged items.
  • Paper Supplies – Having enough toilet paper and paper towels is a MUST.
  • Entertainment – Staying cooped up in the apartment leaves for little to do sometimes. Have a book, puzzle, or even a toy at the ready! Here is a great blog about what to do when you have to stay inside!

Through the years, Houston has prepared itself for many hurricanes during hurricane season. Hurricane preparation is the best thing you can do for yourself during this time. Premier Patient Housing is here to provide support to its guests and keep them in the loop!
